Original Research: Quantitative

M&IHC has designed, piloted, collected, cleaned, and analyzed numerous surveys capturing quantitative data. Survey findings are often synthesized into comprehensive reports which have been used to inform internal capacity building, program monitoring, research, and impact strategies.

Baseline Survey: The Maisha Bora Program in Tanzania

M&IHC served as Savannas Forever Tanzania's Co-Principal Investigator for the Maisha Bora project. M&IHC led the research on maternal and child health, nutrition, WASH, and HIV. This included working with multiple partners in Tanzania (World Food Programme, Vétérinaires Sans Frontières, Iles de Paix, Belgian Technical Cooperation, and Trias) to develop a household survey, collect data and GIS markers in 15 rural villages, clean all of the primary data, analyze the data, present data to stakeholders, and generate a comprehensive report containing qualitative and quantitative data summaries. This household survey served as the baseline for an impact evaluation and contributed to the 5-year program monitoring strategy.

Mobile Phone Research Using a Contraception App in Nigeria

M&IHC supported Girl Effect’s Evidence Teams in Nigeria and the UK by designing and delivering a participatory research project on reproductive health. This project utilized Technology Enabled Girl Ambassadors (TEGAs) in Kano, Nigeria, who used a bespoke mobile phone research app to understand why only 1% of girls aged 15-19 in Northern Nigeria are using modern contraception. This project was a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Grand Challenge awardee.

Mystery Client Surveys to Understand & Increase Access to Family Planning

M&IHC spearheaded the implementation of a project aimed to increase women’s access to family planning methods outside of the formal facility-based health system. After conducting a literature review, M&IHC designed the quantitative research protocol for conducting Mystery Client Surveys. These surveys assessed and measured the accessibility, availability, and pricing of medication at Patent and Proprietary Medicine Vendors (PPMVs) and pharmacies, and evaluated the quality of information and communication between outlet staff and clients in a specific region of Nigeria. Survey tools were programmed into SurveyCTO and internally piloted during the mystery client training for data collectors. The results of this study will help our client discover the actual distribution and discussions on medication in PPMVs and pharmacies.
